Oncology
Most human cancers are due to 2-8 mutations distributed over 100-200 genes. These mutations disturb up to a dozen intracellular pathways, and this pathway disturbance is the basis for the cancer’s histology, natural history, and response to therapy. Genetic tests are a resource which can help the clinician characterise these attributes of a cancer, and thereby guide advice and therapy for the patient.
Sonic Genetics provides a range of assays for both haematological malignancies and solid tumours. These assays include cytogenetics, FISH for deletions and rearrangements, molecular analysis for specific mutations and mutation load, and gene expression assays. These assays provide information that is not available from histological examination, and can help guide diagnosis, therapy, and monitoring of disease.
Our genetic pathologists are available to discuss specific cases and to assist in the interpretation and utilisation of these tests. We recognise that genetic tests are just one source of information for clinicians managing the challenge of cancer. Sonic also provides a comprehensive range of cancer tests in other disciplines of pathology.
